What dose it mean to unlock a cell phone?

I am gonna sell my Nokia N73 on eBay, however, I see that the others for sale are “unlocked”. What dose it mean to unlock a phone? How do I do it? Or how can I find out if mine is unlocked? Thanks!

What is GSM Remote Unlocking?

GSM unlocking removes the sim lock on your phone, allowing you to use one phone on any GSM network.
